2007 NFL Draft Player Reviews - OL Joe Thomas

Central High School in Brookfield Wisconsin must be proud of their own Joe Thomas. The 6'8 313lb LT is the best OL in the country, HANDS DOWN. He is also arguably the most athletic as well. He played DT for the Badgers last year when they got in a pinch.

Thomas is projected to be among the top three overall selections in the 2007 National Football League Draft by ESPNs Mel Kiper Jr. , Scouts Inc. and us here at the War Room. Thomas was named to 2006 Playboy All-America team, the 2006 preseason first-team All-American and the nations No. 1 offensive tackle according to The War Room. A second-team preseason All-American according to Lindys and Street & Smiths, Thomas was selected to 2006 preseason watch lists for the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award and was assigned the only one-on-one block on UWs offensive line 90 percent of the time the past two seasons.

In 2005, Thomas was first-team All-American according to Pro Football Weekly and was second-team All-American by Walter Camp, SI.com and Rivals.com. A consensus first-team All-Big Ten, Thomas was a Lombardi Award semifinalist. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 5 honoree, Thomas was an Academic All-Big Ten choice, where he started all 13 games at left tackle and was named UWs co-offensive player of the week vs. Bowling Green and Penn State. Thomas earned third varsity letter and injured right knee while filling in on depleted defensive line in Capital One Bowl game vs. Auburn.

Thomas earned second varsity letter in 2004 when started all 12 regular season games at left tackle. He was a consensus honorable mention All-Big Ten pick and named Academic All-Big Ten and first-team academic all-district. Thomas set UW indoor record in shot put with throw of 62-0 feet, set in 2005 and was a 2005 NCAA indoor and outdoor qualifier in shot put.

Thomas in 2003 earned first varsity letter and played much of season as a blocking TE (wearing No. 82). Thomas was the first true freshman OL to see action during the Barry Alvarez era, and started at DE vs. Auburn in Music City Bowl and assisted on seven tackles.

Thomas was rated as the No. 4 offensive tackle in the nation according to Tom Lemming and among top 20 offensive tackles nationally, top 25 players in the Midwest and No. 3 player in Wisconsin according to Rivals.com. A PrepStar All-American and second-team All-America offensive tackle according to USA Today. Thomas was also a member of Detroit Free Press All-Midwest team , and was a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first-team all-state defensive lineman and second-team all-state offensive tackle as a senior. Thomas was also first-team all-state honors at DE from Wisconsin Football Coaches Association and Associated Press. The WFCA 2002 Defensive Player of the Year with fellow Badger Justin Ostrowski, had 85 tackles and 12 QB sacks as a senior and 70 tackles and eight sacks as a junior. The three-time all-conference selection and four-year letter winner in football, track and basketball, captained football and basketball teams his senior year and finished fifth in nationals in shot put as a junior. Thomas was all-conference, all-area and all-state selection in shot put and discus four-year honor roll student. He was also on the U.S. Army Academic All-America team, and was coached in football by Rick Synold at Brookfield Central High.

The business major (real estate and urban land economics) makes his parents Eric and Sally very proud and embodies everything college sports is about.

Joe Thomas is the highest rated OL I have since Orlando Pace (who went #1 overall). He has all the tools to be an all-pro for years to come and his play reminds ME of HOFer (and Chaffey High School/USC alum) Anthony Munoz.

By developing your first touch, you'll be able to operate much faster on the field without having to compete with the stronger, more mature teammates. Building Bigger And Stronger Rugby Players - The Sydney University Experiment

It is widely acknowledged that the average body weight of rugby players has increased considerably over recent years. Less recognised is the extent to which modern defensive alignments and strategies have transformed rugby matches into contests of attrition where bigger and stronger teams tend to wear down their smaller and physically weaker opponents over the course of a game. Perhaps the most notable change has been the increased importance of physical dominance in the backline.

Responding to this, Sydney University's rugby club has been able to demonstrate that with the right combination of coach and infrastructure, it is possible to fast track the physical development of players outside a professional playing environment. In fact within a couple of seasons these players are able to achieve a body mass comparable to that of seasoned professionals together with a solid foundation of basic strength.

In late May, Sydney University announced its team for the first round of the Tooheys New Cup, the premier competition in Sydney club rugby. All of the fifteen players are past or current students who had been developed through the Club's Colts and lower grade teams. None of them are paid to play for the Club, although the eleven who are still students receive modest scholarship assistance. Only three of the players are on professional contracts.

It is instructive to compare their body weight and age profiles with those of squads from four major rugby countries, those of Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa. The average weight of the international teams varies from 101.2 to 102.9 kilograms while their average age is from 25.5 to 27.2 years. Comparative figures for the Sydney University team are 100.5 kilograms and 22.5 years.

It can be seen that the part-time, unpaid Sydney University players, though three to five years younger, weigh only a couple of kilograms less than the world's best players. This is quite extraordinary as normally a much greater weight disparity would be expected.

For the past three years Sydney University Football Club has been operating an Elite Development Squad (EDS) program for its top grade and colts players. Utilising one of the best equipped gymnasiums in Australian rugby, players train for eleven months of the year and undertake four weights sessions per week off-season and a lesser number while playing.

The program's strength and conditioning components have been devised and administered by Martin Harland, a sports scientist who has previously worked with professional rugby league, Australian football and basketball teams. His programs for rugby players place a high degree of emphasis on basic strength development and rugby-specific fitness. A distinguishing feature of his approach is a concentration on heavy lower body work through exercises such as squats, deadlifts and cleans. In addition, both backs and forwards make intensive use of the MyoQuip ScrumTruk, a rugby-specific apparatus that targets the large mass leg extensor muscles, specifically the gluteal and quadriceps groups. Hypertrophy or increased muscle mass is a natural and not unintended by-product of such training.

Another distinctive feature of Martin Harland's rugby training regimen is his requirement that backs undertake the same rigorous basic strength routines as forwards. Many strength and conditioning coaches reserve the heavy "grunt" work for forwards, or even restrict it to the tight five.

Exposing backs to very serious weight training has produced a quite extraordinary outcome at Sydney University, as evidenced by comparing the body weights of their forwards and backs with those of the Wallabies and the four Australian Super 14 franchises, the ACT Brumbies, NSW Waratahs, Queensland Reds and Western Force.

Not surprisingly, the University's young forwards are outweighed by each of the five professional squads, 105.3 kilograms compared to 109.1 to 111.1 kilograms. However, in the backs the situation is reversed with the University players averaging 95.1 kilograms as opposed to 90.9 to 92.9 kilograms. Thus the Sydney University backs outweigh Australia's national and provincial squads by between 2.2 and 4.2 kilograms per man.

If we look at the difference in body weight between backs and forwards it can be seen that for Sydney University it averages 10.2 kilograms, against 16.2 to 19.4 kilograms for Australia's professional squads, a very substantial difference.

The Sydney University experiment seems to be providing clear evidence that the body weight of rugby backs can be dramatically increased through serious weight training, but the question arises as to whether this has benefits in terms of playing performance.

One answer is that the other strength-oriented football code, American football, has traditionally used training methods similar to those of Martin Harland. All players, whether linemen or running backs, are required to do heavy gym work. No one would seriously suggest that their quick players have inferior dynamic abilities to rugby players.

Another justification for building heavier backs with superior leg drive lies in the already mentioned importance of physical dominance in the rugby backline. With the modern emphasis on structure and coordination in defensive alignments, bigger and stronger backs are better able to continually repel opposition attacks and also over the course of a game are likely to create physical and mental fatigue in their counterparts.

Having achieved a strong foundation of basic strength and greater body mass, Martin Harland is then able to focus on speed and explosiveness in his players. It is clear that the Sydney University approach yields results on the playing field. 2005 was the Club's most successful year, winning the Sydney Club Championship, the First Grade Premiership and four lower grade Premierships.

Even more importantly, players who graduate from such a program are much better equipped to withstand the rigours of modern rugby.

The Law of Acting As-If

If you do not get past the first paragraph, here is the secret to learning new skills. Ask yourself this question:

If you were already a master at this new skill, specifically what would you be doing differently?

Itemized differences must be observable: facial expressions, mudras (hand gestures), postures, or changes in the pitch, rhythm and tone of your voice. Your thoughts must change including beliefs and expectations. You have to expect to succeed or there is no improvement.

In speed reading the first noticeable deviation from snailing 200 words per minute with up to 70% comprehension, is how you use your eyes.

a) Go Lizard, means activating your peripheral vision to see

up to six words wide instead of your old-tyme one-word

wide.

b)You use a handheld pacer to read and underline the text to activate your vestibulo-ocular-reflex.

c) You use our Notefisting schema to ask yourself seven

questions of the text as you read.

c)You use your Peg and Link system to 2x your long- term memory.

Mental Movies

To change an old skill to a new and better one, the key step is to create a new DVD to file in your hippocampus (memory bank). Imagine each skill you own having a DVD you access each time you use it. Tying your shoes, typing and surfing the internet have imbedded programs. To learn a new way, you must replace the old with a new DVD, playing your new skill mental movie.

How

Sit down, close your eyes and practice seeing yourself using the new, better skill. In speed reading it is first, moving your head left-to-right and vice-versa as you second, mentally visualize using your finger to move down (underline) the text.

You nonconscious mind (right brain) does not differentiate between physical practice (training) and mental (mirror neurons) rehearsal. Both reinforce (strengthen) your neural network connections. Practice makes perfect is a law of learning and improved memory.

Professor William James

Back in 1897 at Harvard Dr. James explain his theory of acting as-if in a lecture called The Will To Believe. He summed it up, Evidence will come to verify new beliefs and activities (skills) that we could not have been achieved any other way.

He saw the law of Acting as-if as a lever to change our status-quo. James said, When you begin a new skill, you continue to act as if the old skill is still dominant. Humans get friendly with their comfort-zone, even when it disables the improved outcome they desire.

The first step is to mentally and physically inhibit the activities of your old skill. It requires a new intention to improve, and daily practice to create a new status-quo.

Acting Plus

To install a new skill and place it on auto-pilot, we must first feel as-if, believe as-if, think as-if, and finally act as-if, the new skill is the only way to behave. In speed reading, we install the new system on our right-brain, while snailing (stardard reading) remains within our left-brain.

Transitional Curve

You have seen the results of a learning curve. Some folks have a long (slow) learning curve, while others are blessed with a short (quick) one. It is often the difference in your career fast-track and promotions.

Remember before you could ride a bike, drive your car or use the computer? Your Learning Curve in those areas was based on implanting entirely new skills.

We also have a transitional curve, when we attempt to change a skill already on auto-pilot. Speed reading is an improvement over snailing because you read and remember three books, articles and reports in the time others can hardly finish one.

How to Improve Your Transitional Curve

You first convince yourself there is a significant benefit in changing the status-quo. Next, you practice daily using the new skill, and avoiding the old programming. You rehearse (practice) by making mental-movies using and enjoying the benefits of the new approach.

Can you imagine a short movie staring you being handed a $10,000 bonus check for being executive of the year? Students can practice seeing themselves with an A+ on their finals. Acting as-if helps create the reality by building your self-confidence and new beliefs of mastery.

Who's Tops in Hockey and Who's Not

The National Hockey League needs to do more to encourage better coverage of the hockey games. With so many other sports realizing national coverage, the NHL is sometimes forgotten. However, this year, there's a race for the Stanley Cup, and only one is set to win it. But which team will that be?

Right now, bookmakers are showing that, while the Philadelphia Flyers were on top only days ago, the odds are now swinging back and forth with the Flyers and other potential contenders such as the Ottawa Senators, as the teams to watch in the sprint for the Stanley Cup this year. Of course, all of the NHL information and stats change daily, but the odds are the best current indicator of which team is certainly a contender for the Stanley Cup of 2006.

However, the race for the 2006 Cup didn't simply begin with the end of the 2005 playing season and the winning of the Stanley Cup for the year. It began over 100 years ago in 1892, at a dinner of the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association. A speech was delivered that indicated that a challenge cup would be a good idea and that this contest should be held from year to year for the teams in the Dominion of Canada. At the time, that was a grand total of three major teams. You might be accurate in an assumption that the National Hockey League has seen tremendous growth since then.

Lord Stanley purchased a silver cup which by todays standards would only have a value of only about $50 and appointed Sheriff John Sweetland and Philip D. Ross as trustees of the cup. This Stanley Cup is the same cup that the two men were trustees over all of those years ago.

The winners of each year's Stanley Cup are tasked to hold the Cup and to return it in good condition to the trustees at year's end so that it may be given to the winner of the next Cup. The Cup is never to become the exclusive property of a single team regardless of how many times that team may win the trophy but each year the winning team's club name and the year are engraved on the silver ring fitted on the Cup.

That very first year, the Stanley Cup was taken by the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) hockey club as the winners for 1894. Unfortunately, Lord Stanley was never to witness a championship game or even the presentation of the trophy he had purchased because he returned to England, his homeland, in mid-1893.

The popularity of hockey grew so quickly that in 1895 almost every town in Canada had a team which thrived on hockey. No longer were Ontario, Quebec and Winnipeg the only teams that were ready to take the Stanley Cup. Instead numerous teams came out and all of the teams were strong contenders for the Stanley Cup. In 1896, the Victorias of Montreal versus the Victorias of Winnipeg placed with the Winnipeg team taking the Cup 2 to 0. Less than a year later, a rematch was to occur.

Presented as the greatest sports ever in Winnipeg history, even in the economy of 1896, tickets were scalped for as much as $12 each. Everyone wanted to see this Stanley Cup playoff game. Montreal won this match up 6 to 5 after being down 2 to 0 at halftime. It was documented as the finest match ever played in Canada.

While the early Stanley Cup games differed greatly from today's game, the popularity has continued to rise over the many years. Originally, there were seven men on the ice for each team rather than the six we know today. Sideboards were non-existent and players used very little sports equipment. Injuries were quite common and much more serious than what players of today have to deal with in their hockey games and practices.

The Stanley Cup is considered to be the most famous trophy in the sporting world. It is certainly the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes, having logged more than 400,000 miles in travel during only the past five seasons. Traditionally, each winning player and team management staff member gets to take the Cup home for one day to share with their friends and family.

No matter how the lines move between now and the final play for this year's Stanley Cup, you simply will not want to miss keeping track as the big day draws closer. This game is the Super Bowl of hockey and it pales in comparison to many other sports as far as national coverage is concerned. The Stanley Cup will be watched by millions, some of whom are not traditionally hockey fans and many who do not know the history behind Lord Stanleys great purchase. And for a sporting event to be worthy of a trophy which travels over 400,000 miles to note the worthy accomplishments of one lone team, its an event that no one should miss especially those behind the major networks! Incidentally, in the humble opinion of many fans, the only true contender this year for the Stanley Cup is the Philadelphia Flyers. What do you think?
